The small town of Lichtensteig in the middle of the Thur Valley has been an administrative hub and market town since the late Middle Ages. Its intact historic centre with its arcades lining both sides of the main street and a well-preserved townhall and town houses is a Swiss cultural asset. Its residents and politicians have successfully used creative solutions to combat a loss of the local population and to revitalise the old town.
